Gynecology Q & A

What happens during a gynecology exam?

Your gynecology exam, also known as a well-woman or annual exam, is your one-on-one time with your OB/GYN to evaluate your health and address any concerns you may have. Depending on your previous health history, age, and symptoms or concerns, your gynecology exam may include:

  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing
  • STD treatment, including HPV treatment
  • Diagnostic pelvic ultrasound
  • Mammogramograpy referral
  • A pelvic exam or Pap smear
  • Birth control planning
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Breast exam

Dr. Tinoco offers a wide variety of modern treatment solutions right in the office. For instance, if you have a positive Pap test, meaning abnormal or precancerous cells are present, Dr. Tinoco can perform a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). This advanced therapy involves inserting a small electrical wire loop into your vagina to gently remove abnormal cells from your cervix.

When should I schedule a gynecology appointment?

As long as you’re generally healthy, Dr. Tinoco recommends you to come in for a well-woman exam once a year. But there are other times outside of your routine preventive care visit when it’s important to come in, too. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Tinoco, if you:

  • Have pelvic pain
  • Want to get pregnant
  • Need to start or change birth control
  • Are experiencing symptoms of an STD, like sores or blisters

You should also book an exam with Dr. Tinoco if you’re experiencing irregularity with your periods, or are starting to have menopausal symptoms, including vaginal dryness.

How do I prepare for my gynecology appointment?

There are a few things you can do to prepare for your gynecology appointment or well-woman exam at the office of Lorena Tinoco, MD. For instance, if you know you’re due for a Pap smear, try to book your appointment on days when you’re not on your period. Your menstrual flow can affect your Pap test results. It’s also helpful to:

  • Learn about your family medical history
  • Know the first day of your last menstrual period
  • Send over medical records from your previous OB/GYN
  • Make a list of all medications and supplements, as well as their dosages

Dr. Tinoco can often provide any essential treatments you need, like prescribing birth control or hormone therapy, during your gynecology visit.
